Summer Bird Watching Tips

Summer can be an amazing time to get out in nature and enjoy some of the most intricate gifts the universe has to offer.  Bird watching can be a good way to get your daily dose of the outdoors and feel connected to the wide world. If you are a novice watcher, these basic tips can help ensure a successful and safe bird watching experience.

1.      Get a Pair of Binoculars

Looking at birds with your naked eyes can be enjoyable, but birds have so many spectacular and minute details, that having some extra help appreciating these fine creatures may be something you want to invest in if you are going to transition into a seasoned bird watcher, and you don’t have to spend a ton of money on a decent pair of specs.

2.     Get a Bird Guide

There are about 10,000 species of birds in the world, and if you are a novice bird enthusiast, chances are you are learning as you go.  A good bird guide will help you recognize your new favorites by sight and sound and make your watching experience all the richer.

3.      Listen with Your Ears

Each bird species has a sound all their own, and you can learn to decipher which birds are which based on their calls!

4.     Stay Hydrated

Bird watching will involve you going out into parks or sanctuaries, or somewhere where the summer sun and heat can get to you.  Safety first! and remember to drink plenty of fluids.  Everyone needs different amounts of water, but the Institute of Medicine recommends about 13 cups of water per day for men, and 9 cups of water per day for women.

5.     Be Patient

You may not see all the colorful or unique plumage you want immediately, but bird watching can bring you a calmness and serenity that you may not expect.  Don’t give up on it.
